Posted on May 20, 2012, Flash Website. Bad!
, in ThePestService.com blog
Have you noticed how many websites are not supported on mobile devices? There's a whole bunch of them. Some of them don't resize properly and some of them are just too large. One of my most favorite online shoe stores is 6PM.com, but trying to make any selection is almost unbearable. I normally don't care enough to do anything about it, but in this case I asked them to make some changes, and if they need a developer, I was willing to help. But this blog post is not about that, it's about the flash websites.
I have been saying this since 1990s - don't use flash! Not that it's not pretty - it is. But just like the 3D movie experience, it should have ended in the nineties. When people contact me asking if I know how to make flash websites, my response is usually: know how - yes, will I build one - sorry, that's against my principals. Here are some reasons why.
Flash is not supported by iPhones and iPads. You probably saw commercials for tablets saying "oh, we're so much better than apple because we can play flash". Well, la-di-da. My Windows 95 machine can do so as well, but that doesn't make it a new technology. Apple did not suck it up, and millions of consumers are using iPhones and iPads. Don't expect them to do something about it. You take the first step.
Flash websites are not search engine friendly. Yeah - I've said it. You know what flash is to me? Video on steroids. You know what that means? Flash belongs on YouTube and not in the searchable web space. How many flash websites have you seen that top the search engine charts? That's a rhetorical question, but I'll still answer it. None! Do yourself a favor and lose that baggage.
Flash is too darn troublesome for managing content. Sure, tools could be built to write into XML documents for the loads of the slide shows and content, but that is okay if you are dealing with one client and you don't care about storage space. Weren't we told that everything is going to be on a cloud by 2015? If that's the case then better put that flash away as soon as you can!
